Tommy Helms, a 2nd baseman for the Reds and Astros in the 1960s and 1970s, passed away on April 13, 2025 at age 83.
Helms was the 1966 NL Rookie of the Year, and was the Reds' regular 3rd baseman in his rookie season.
He switched to 2nd base in 1967 (replacing Pete Rose), playing there almost exclusively for the remainder of his career.
Helms was an All-Star in '67 and '68, and a Gold Glove winner in '70 and '71.
He was traded to the Astros in the Joe Morgan deal, playing there from 1972-75, as their regular 2nd baseman for the first 3 years, then as a part-time player in 1975.
Helms played sparingly with the Pirates and Red Sox from 1976-77.
He later coached for the Reds, and managed them briefly when Pete Rose was suspended, then later fired as manager.
